Valencia Shines in Spring Tennis Showdown
The Vaughn College Phoenix tennis program held its spring singles tournament on April 22 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, drawing a strong field of 14 student-athletes from both the men's and women's tennis teams. After an intense evening of competition, Sebastian Valencia emerged as the tournament champion.
The single-elimination format featured some of the top talent from the Phoenix tennis program. Following two tough early rounds, the final four players were Sebastian Valencia, Justin Bustamante, Carlos Castillo, and Jean De La Rosa.
In the semifinals, Sebastian defeated Justin 6-3, while Carlos matched that performance with a 6-3 win of his own. The championship match saw Sebastian dominate with a commanding 6-0 victory over Carlos to claim the title.
Head Coach Joseph Swierczewski was impressed with the level of play throughout the tournament:
"The matches were competitive and exciting from start to finish. It was great to see the talent and energy on display. We're definitely planning to host this tournament again soon."
Looking ahead, the Phoenix tennis program will host its annual summer training sessions to help students sharpen their skills. Official practice dates will be announced in May.
Congratulations to Sebastian and all the participants for making the tournament a success!
