Second Week Of Warriors Basketball Camp Comes Down to Double Overtime Thriller

The second week of the Warriors basketball camp ended with an exciting championship game between two great teams. Throughout the week, the level of competition increased as each team  of skilled athletes played in regular season games before receiving their seed for the playoffs.

The championship game for the second week consisted of the Warriors, coached by Ricky McCollum, director of athletics, fitness and wellness, and the Hurricanes led by camp assistant coach Carlton Green.  The Warriors, seeded number two, had an outstanding performance during the regular season, receiving a first round bye. The Hurricanes were seeded fourth, which required them to compete in a play-in game against the Brooklyn Fly, another camp team. The Hurricanes emerged victorious during the play-in game, giving them a pivotal win in the fight for the championship trophy.

In the second round, the Hurricanes played the well-rested Monstars, the champions in the camp's first week. The Hurricanes prevailed in an evenly matched game; a major upset as the Monstars were seeded number one going into playoffs. On the other side of the bracket, the Warriors had a first round bye and played the third seed team, OKC, and won in a dominating fashion. This led to a championship game between the Warriors and the Hurricanes, in which these teams split the regular season record. The championship went back and forth throughout the game, each team trading baskets and ending the second half with a tie, leading to a double overtime win by the Warriors.

"This was one of the hardest games as it was a tough fought match between two highly competitive teams," said McCollum of the final game. "It really makes you appreciate the unpredictable nature of the game."

As camp concluded, Jerima DeWese, assistant vice president of student affairs, crowned our 2013 Vaughn Warriors Camp Champions with medals and custom-made snap back hats. McCollum presented two individual awards: Most Improved Player to Briana Monroe, and Most Valuable Player to Rashad Luckett.
