Warriors Open up Season in Vermont

The Vaughn College Warriors women's basketball team opened up their season in Vermont on Friday, November 14. The Warriors would face the Fighting Saints of St. Joseph College in what turned out to be one of the most thrilling games in program history. Freshman Maia Rivers (Dix Hills, NY) connected on six three-point field goals in the game, tying a school record for most three-pointers made in a single game. Rivers finished her collegiate basketball debut with 23 points, two assists, three steals, and nine rebounds.

The Warriors were trailing the Fighting Saints at the half by 12 points. In the second half the lead ballooned to as much as 21 points. The Fighting Saints had complete control of the game and a large home crowd behind them.  Determined to get back in the game, point guard Cianna Peterson (Detroit, MI) fired up her teammates with her inspirational play on offense and defense. Peterson scored a team high 26 points, and dished out three assists in the game. The Warriors cut a 21 point deficit down to two points with underneath eight minutes to play. Unfortunately the Warriors ran out of gas as they could not get over the hump to retake the led from the Fighting Saints.

The Fighting Saints beat the Warriors by a final score of 71-65. The Warriors next contest will be played on Thursday, November 17. They will take on Cooper Union.
