Warriors Battle the Privateers in Double-Header

BRONX, N.Y. - On Saturday, April 4, the men's baseball team traveled to the Bronx to take on the Privateers of the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime. The two teams played a double-header contest. Despite the sunny weather, the wind was a major factor throughout both games. The Warriors struggled in the first game to make routine plays in the infield and outfield. Frustration with the weather conditions, and lack of offensive and defensive production, took the Warriors out of the game mentally.

Vaughn College would use three pitchers to complete game one. Francisco Candelario (Bronx, NY) started on the mound and was relieved by Michael Dunn (Centerport, NY) at the top of the third inning. Dunn would pitch one and two thirds innings before junior pitcher, Mikhail Rodriguez (Jamaica, NY), came in to close out the game. The Privateers would go one to defeat the Warriors in five innings in game one.

The Warriors put out a much better effort in game two, both offensively and defensively. Frederick Thomas (Brooklyn, NY) pitched a complete seven inning game. Brandon Nunez (Floral Park, NY) made huge defensive plays with his glove at second base. Joshua Labiner (Commack, NY) scored the first run for the Warriors on the season, on a sacrifice fly ball hit by Candelerio. The break in between games seemed to reenergize and refocus the Warriors as they remained competitive in the second game of the double-header. Unfortunately, the Privateers were able to ward off the Warriors scoring opportunities to secure the double-header sweep in game two.

The Vaughn College men's baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday, April 8, against Pennsylvania State Hazleton. The Warriors are schedule to travel to Pennsylvania pending on the weather.
