Warriors Baseball Open up Season against the Owls

QUEENS, N.Y. – On Wednesday, April 3, the Vaughn Warriors baseball team opened up their 2015 season against the Owls of the University of Maine Presque-Isle. The Owls entered the game with a 2-4 record. This was Warriors first taste of live action due to several rainouts and postponements.

Kevin Mendez (Wantagh, NY) started on the mound for the Warriors. The junior pitcher had complete control of the game up until the fourth inning.  He would leave in the middle of the fourth giving up three hits and three runs to the owls. Frederick Thomas (Brooklyn, NY) closed out the game giving up seven hits and seven runs in two innings.

The Warriors struggled to get their bats going all game. Anthony Collazos (Richmond Hill, NY) and Mendez were the only two Warriors to record hits. At the bottom of the fifth inning the Warriors had their best chance of getting on the score board, with two outs and runners on first and third. Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to put together enough offense to drive any runs in. The Owls would go on to defeat the Warriors by a final score of 10-0 in six innings.

Next up for the men's baseball team will be the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime Privateers. This will be a double-header contest scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 4. The Warriors look to bounce back and get the first win for the program competing as a varsity sport.
