Rivers Shines In Season Opener Loss

Rivers Shines In Season Opener Loss

The Lady Warriors opened up their basketball season on Thursday, November 16, against Pratt Institute. The Lady Warriors hosted the Cannoneers at Elmcor Recreation Center in front of a energetic home crowd. This was the first meeting between both teams this season. They will play again in the second semester.

Senior captain and four year starter Maia Rivers (Dix Hills, NY) did not disappoint the  home fans in the season opener. Once again Rivers was asked to lead a young basketball team of freshmen and sophomores. She played all 40 minutes and finished the game with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Rivers also recorded five steals and had one block.

It was an exciting game of runs between both teams. The Lady Warriors went down early but climbed their way back into the game. Unfortunately the Lady Warriors were unable to come up with key baskets down the stretch in a tight four point contest. The women's basketball team would go on to drop their season opener to the Cannoneers by a final score of 42-34.

Sophomore guard Nicole White (St. Pauls, NC) had seven points, four rebounds and two steals in the season opener. Freshman guard Emily Betances had a difficult first game of her college career. Betances fouled out of the game with four points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Warriors basketball team will have one more game before the Thanksgiving Day break on Tuesday, November 21. They will host Five Towns College at 6 p.m. at Elmcor Recreation Center.
