Pink Nation Game Goes Down To The Wire

Pink Nation Game Goes Down To The Wire

The Lady Warriors hosted the Pratt Institute Cannoneers on Thursday, February 16. Both teams entered the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) matchup out of playoff contention. The Cannoneers got the best of the Lady Warriors in the first game of the season, but the Lady Warriors would look to redeem themselves in their final game of the year.

This was the third season that Vaughn College has dedicated a home game during the regular season to bring awareness to  everyone who has been affected by breast cancer. Both teams wore pink memorabilia to support the fight against breast cancer.

The Lady Warriors and the Cannoneers had identical scores at the end of the first and second quarter. The game was notched at 26-26 at halftime. The Cannoneers held a one point advantage at the end of the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Warriors 21-20.

The final quarter was extremely exciting as both teams went back and forth taking the lead. In the final 30 seconds of the game, the Lady Warriors trailed the Cannoneers by one point. Vaughn College junior captain Maia Rivers (Dix Hills, NY) was fouled on a three-point attempt with 11 seconds to go in the game. Rivers converted on two out of three free-throws to put the Lady Warriors up by one. Unfortunately for the Lady Warriors, the Cannoneers would score a lay-up to put them back up by one with six seconds remaining in the game. Rivers attempted a long distance shot to win the game but would come up short.

The women's basketball team would drop their final game of the season to Pratt Institute by a final score of  67-66.

Rivers ended the year recording her sixth double-double. She scored a game high 26 points and pulled down a season high 14 rebounds. Gabrielle Robinson (New York, NY) ended the season recording her first double-double. She finished with a season high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kayla Bryant (Bronx, NY) chipped in 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. Nicole White (St. Pauls, NC) added six points and a season high 15 rebounds.
