Warriors Edged by Oaks in Season Opener

The Vaughn College Warriors men's soccer team opened up the 2018-19 season hosting Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) opponent SUNY ESF on Saturday, September 15, at the Aviator Sports and Events Center. The Warriors played the 2016 HVIAC conference champions tight the entire match. A late second half goal from the Oaks of SUNY ESF would be the difference in the game as the Warriors dropped their season home opener by a final score of 1-0.

Senior goalkeeper Hussein Saleh (Maspeth, NY)  played a brilliant match for the Warriors. Saleh was slotted as the number two goalie on the depth chart coming into the game but started behind the net. He had an incredible off-season getting his body in better condition and worked extremely hard on his goalkeeping instincts and techniques. Saleh made some masterful saves for the Warriors during the 90 minute match, recording 8 in total.

Sophomore midfielder Azzeddine Sekkat (Astoria, NY) and junior forward Ali Saleh (Maspeth, NY) both had solid games for Vaughn College. Sekkat had 4 shots on goal, nearly connecting on three of his attempts. Saleh played physical and poised for the Warriors and finished with three shots on goal.

The men's soccer team will look to bounce back from a tough loss when they travel to face the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels for their next contest. They will play the Blue Angels on Wednesday, September 19, at 5:00 p.m.
