Pena Scores 1000th Career Point to Lift Warriors Past Fisher

QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Michael Pena (Dumont, NJ) scored his 1000th career basketball point on Tuesday, January 19 against Fisher College. The Warriors trailed the Falcons by two points heading into the halftime period. The fast paced high intense game was reminence of last year's contest between the two schools. Vaughn College lost to Fisher College last season, 70-69, after Sergio Mejia (New York, NY) missed a potential buzzer beater to win the game in regulation. 

The second half was a shoot out between both teams. Both the Warriors and the Falcons shot over 50 percent from the field and over 50 percent from distance. Michael Pena would put on a special offensive performance to lead the Warriors in the second half. After scoring 17 points in the first half, Pena poured in 18 second half points to help the Warriors secure a 80-76 victory over Fisher College.Pena finished with a game high 35 points, on 10-16 shooting from the field and 7-12 from behind the three point line. 

Sophomore Sergio Mejia had another solid game for the Warriors. Mejia scored 19 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and dished out five assists. Junior Maleec Taylor (Rockville Centre, NY) chipped in 12 points, three assists, and registered three steals. 

The men's basketball team improves their record to 10-3 on the season. Next up for the Vaughn College Warriors will be a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) matchup against the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Panthers.
