Vaughn College hosted its annual Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Many students received prestigious academic awards for excellence in the classroom and their contributions to the College community. Vaughn athletes were also recognized at the Honors Convocation receiving awards for their athletic achievements and participation in their respective varsity sports.
For the first time in the College's history, both the male and female athletes of the year recipients were freshmen. Ahmed Aly (Astoria, NY) was the recipient of the male athlete of the year award. Aly is a dual- sport athlete at Vaughn, competing on both the men's soccer and men's tennis teams. He was named to the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) all-conference team for both men's soccer and men's tennis. Aiysha Dunlap (Amittyville, NY) was the recipient of the female athlete of the year award. Dunlap set the College's record for the most rebounds pulled down in a single game with, 30 rebounds. She has multiple rookie of the week honors from the HVIAC and was named to the HVIAC all-conference team for women's basketball.
Jihad Ceaser (Hempstead, NY) finished up his Vaughn College basketball career as the all-time leading scorer in team history. Although Ceaser used up all of his athletic eligibility before the start of the 2013-2014 basketball season, he stayed on campus as a student and an intern in the athletics department. Ceaser's contributions in the athletics department and services to the College were recognized when he was awarded the Warrior Award at the Honors Convocation. The Warrior Award is given to a special student athlete that embodies a warrior spirit in both athletic competition and through community service.
